Social Media and Education

This week I'm going to be looking at different social media environments and how they relate to education. I'll be blogging for a week straight - something I've never done before! Most of these social media platforms that I'll be looking at aren't what I consider to be mainstream, or even typical, social media. Virtual worlds aren't the first thing that I think of when I think of social media. While I'm a little skeptical about some of them, let's hope I learn something in the process.
I'll be looking at the overall look, feel, and usability of these environments, as well as how they are used (or can be used) in education. It's important to know who the target audience is for each platform, and decide whether or not the content is appropriate for that audience. Why were these environments created? Can they be used in the classroom? Do they have learning goals? What are their strengths and weaknesses? And finally, what is my personal reaction? I've got a lot of learning to do, and I'm excited to get started.
First up, three environments that are designed with teens and tweens in mind. Check back tomorrow!
